As a member of Operation Ivy and Rancid, Matt Freeman is one of punk’s most influential bassists. And over on his Bass Bunker YouTube channel, he acts as your own personal Obi Wan and show you the ropes to songs like “Sound System,” “Time Bomb,” and “Freeze Up,” from Operation Ivy’s Energy.

Originally released by Lookout Records in 1989, Energy is a ska-punk classic, driven by the songwriting of Jesse Michaels and Tim Armstrong, who would go on to lead Rancid with Freeman. Recently, Armstrong’s Hellcat Records announced pre-orders for an exclusive silver and white splatter edition of the album, limited to only 700 copies through Turntable Lab.

Drop it on the turntable and play along with Matt’s innovative bass lines—and if you wanna send us voice memos of bass licks or anything else, you know what to do: call 1-877-WASTOIDS.
