Sunn O))) Sign to Sub Pop))) | Music News

Drone metal pioneers Sunn O))) have signed to Sub Pop Records. Formed by Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson in 1998 in Seattle—the same city where Sub Pop was also founded more than a decade earlier—Sunn O))) created a dense, heavily distorted sonic world that connected the avant-garde to the heavy metal underground. Ritualistic, saturated, and crushingly spaced out. Much of their work has been released by Anderson’s own Southern Lord Records, but now they’ve joined the Sub Pop roster, kicking off the partnership with a maxi 12” record featuring three new songs including “Eternity’s Pillars.” The song is named for the public access television show created by spiritual jazz legend Alice Coltrane in the 1980s. Like Coltrane, Sunn O))) believe in: “music’s capacity to attain spiritual transcendence.” These new recordings are streaming now and available via two vinyl variants, including a limited gold pressing and a clear edition. Meanwhile, you can stream episodes of Eternity’s Pillar on the Criterion Channel & dublab’s YouTube channel.
