Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, Escape-ism) has been an underground music institution for decades. Now he’s focused on bringing back human dignity through off the grid rock & roll transcendence. Is this a hopelessly outmoded idea in a digital age? Well maybe. Salvador Cresta rings him up to discuss a protest record against sound itself, his bloodyminded creative ethos, and the beauty of things existing only offline. Be bop a-lula, it’s Midnight Music Review in the Attic.

I had an idea regarding “SV is the enemy” as said by an indie rock star who tours the country. It’s very astute to identify SV. So here’s the idea. Picture SV as a bunch of VCs. Picture SV as a bunch of megalomaniacal nascent-corporations who get their money from VC. This includes the AI you referred to. And where do the VCs get money? University endowment investment committees! And yet, at the same time universities have students many of whom pay attention to Ian Svenonius. So to fight Silicon Valley, point it out to the Dartmouth kids when you see them around. When you play there. The hops in the chain need to be brought back around to the origin of the chain. Get the kids pissed off at SV. They are the ones who can get sweatshops out of the Dartmouth Sweatshirts at the bookstore. And they are the ones that can get the endowment committee out of SV and its vicious crap. If you cut off the money from the VCs, you have a better shot at killing or damaging SV.
