The second annual Band Shirt Day is September 15th, 2023. Presented by MerchFriends and Spotify, with support from Hello Merch, Bandsintown, Rough Trade NYC, and WASTOIDS, Band Shirt Day is a global fundraising initiative, where artists come together for a single day to sell merchandise on their official sales channels and donate proceeds to charitable organizations of their choice.
To celebrate, Dylan Gette-King of Merch Friends has linked up with the WASTOIDS feed for a Band Shirt Day celebration, featuring a history of the band shirt, and stories from the movers and shakers of underground music, figures like Bill Mooney of Kung Fu, who joins us to discuss how he got started making band merch on Redd Kross’ dirty laundry and inspired Sonic Youth’s Washing Machine, and Steve DePace of Flipper, who tells us how Kurt Cobain’s fandom ended up making the Flipper logo a band shirt icon.
This year, Band Shirt Day brings artists like Portugal. The Man, Blondie, Billy Strings, The Revivalists, The Format, Grace Potter, Flipper, Dead Kennedys, and many more together to sell merchandise through their official sales channels, donating a percentage of proceeds to the charitable organizations of their choice. So what shirt are YOU going to wear September 15th for Band Shirt Day 2023? We’d love to hear your choice and any stories you have about band shirts: call 1-877-WASTOIDS and leave us a message. Don’t forget to hashtag #Bandshirtday on September 15th.
