GABRIEL ALCALA

The WASTOIDS Featured Artist series shines a light on some of our favorite creators from the worlds of music and art. Today we’re looking at the eyeball popping art of Gabriel Alcala.

When he’s not playing with his excellent freak rock band Jacuzzi Boys (see their latest 2020 single “The Pits” b/w “Offended” for a quick and dirty primer on the band’s psychedelic punk vibe), Miami-based artist Gabriel Alcala provides vivid and brightly colored artwork for companies like Apple, The New Yorker, Sub Pop, and many more. But if you want to get a more revelatory look at his sideways humor and impeccable design, check out his remarkable Risograph printed Eye Cue zines.

Alcala recently teamed with Slowdown Studio and Part O.T. Plan for a collection of woven blankets, unisex caps, sweatshirts, accessories, and sweat shorts, with 10% of proceeds to Seva, “an organization that since 1978 has provided sight-saving surgeries, eyeglasses, medicine, and other eye care services to more than 44 million people in under-served communities.”  Follow Gabriel on Instagram and check out his website for more trippy art and fun.
